PILLOW PALS:

What are “Pillow Pals”?

They are small pillows (any finished size from 5” x 9” or 12” x 12” to 7” x 14”) made from various fabrics (broadcloth, polar fleece, sweatshirt fabric, flannel, knits, etc) that have “fun” prints.  Try to choose fabric prints that would appeal to all different age groups (babies to 21 year olds) as well as to both boys and girls.  Each child who is admitted to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare chooses a “Pillow Pal” for in the hospital and takes the pillow home as well.

What are they used for?

“Pillow pals” are “non-medical” – something rare when you’re in the hospital.  They are simply to have and to cuddle.  They help make the hospital environment – both physical and emotional – more pleasant for the children.  “Pillow Pals” can also be used to prop a leg or an arm in the proper position.

Instructions for pillow casing

·        Cut two pieces of fabric for each pillow.  Fabric may be cut any size  (see finished sizes above.)  (Note:  When you can, use a different, complementary fabric on each side of the pillow to give the children different textures.)  With right sides together, sew around 3 and one-half sides, leaving a ½” seam allowance – leaving an opening of about 4” for stuffing.

·        Turn right sides of fabric to outside and press flat.

·        Stuff Pillow Pals (plump, but not hard –cuddly and squeezable) and sew opening shut (machine or by hand)

PILLOWS CAN BE KNIT, CROCHET, SEWN, QUILTED, ETC.
